The number of women who are interested in the surgical and non-surgical possibilities of rejuvenating the appearance of their genitalia is rapidly increasing.
Depending on the age, the causes of the interest usually differ.
Young women are generally more interested in:
1. Reducing the size of the labia minora (inner lips).
In most cases, the reason why their appearance displeases them is due to their asymmetry or protrusion outside the labia majora (outer lips).
The different sizes as well as the asymmetry are normal variations of the labia minora. Some young women are influenced by their fashionable “ideal appearance” or have had traumatic experiences with comments made by some companion. Sometimes though, their size is really very large and this causes difficulties in these women’s daily lives.
2. The treatment of dyspareunia.
Apart from psychological or more rarely anatomical causes, the long-term use of the birth control pill can cause vaginal dryness and result in dyspareunia (painful intercourse) in young women.
Women who have given birth naturally or who lose a lot of weight often experience relaxation of the vaginal wall which results in unsatisfying sexual intercourse.
Also, there can be a relaxation of the labia majora (outer lips), of the entrance to the vagina and/or perineal scars.
Distress may be greater in athletes.
After menopause
- the reduction of fat and elastic tissue causes wrinkles in the labia majora (outer lips), which shrink more than the labia minora (inner lips).
- the entrance to the vagina displays attenuation of the epithelium, i.e. atrophy.
The result is:
Painful sexual contact or even the impossibility of having intercourse.
The atrophy causes leukoplakia with unbearable itchiness.
Postmenopausal women but also those who had:
- breast cancer
- cervical cancer
- uterine cancer
- ovarian cancer
have intense symptoms of atrophy after chemotherapy, radiotherapy or pharmaceutically induced early menstruation cessation, i.e.:
- dryness
- a burning feeling
- irritation
- painful intercourse
- frequent urinary tract infections
It is obvious that all this does not help them maintain the quality of their lives.
For their genitourinary system to function smoothly again, hormone substitution therapy should be started. Doubts about the safety of pharmaceutical hormonal substitution with estrogens and progesterone over time and the fear of women even to use local treatment with types of estrogens that are not associated with some form of cancer makes few women choose hormonal substitution treatment. So, the problem of atrophy remains.
Therefore, what Vaginal rejuvenation treatment possibilities do we have for each specific problem?
